Chantilly walks well because of how it was platted, not because of anything added later. It was laid out in the streetcar era, when blocks were short, lots were narrow, and people were expected to reach a stop on foot. What Chantilly does not have is a commercial main street of its own. Daily errands happen just outside the neighborhood — Plaza Midwood to the north, Elizabeth to the west, and the Central Avenue corridor to the northeast. That is the honest framing: a quiet walkable residential fabric next door to two of Charlotte's most walkable commercial districts.
Two edges constrain routes. Independence Boulevard on the south is a freeway-scale barrier that pedestrians should treat as a wall, and the Briar Creek floodplain on the east limits through-connections while providing the ecological sanctuary and greenway access instead.

Where people actually walk
Four routine walks define daily life here.
North to Plaza Midwood. The most-used route out of the neighborhood. Residential streets carry you north to the Central Avenue and Thomas Avenue commercial cluster — restaurants, bars, coffee, a grocery run. Walking time depends entirely on which Chantilly block you start from.
West to Elizabeth. Elizabeth adjoins Chantilly on the west, with its own restaurant stretch, hospital campus employment, and a direct line toward Uptown. From the western blocks this is a short walk; from the eastern blocks it is a longer one.
East to the creek. Streets on the eastern side end at the Briar Creek floodplain. This is the loop walk, the dog walk, the birding walk — and the connection into Charlotte's wider greenway network.
Interior loops. Because the grid is connected, you can build a thirty-minute loop that never repeats a block, which is the underrated everyday benefit of a pre-war street layout.

What to check for your specific address
Walkability in a hundred-year-old neighborhood is a block-level question, not a neighborhood-level one.
Sidewalk continuity, curb ramps, street lighting, crossing quality at the larger streets, and grade all vary within Chantilly. A house three blocks from Plaza Midwood with a comfortable crossing is a different daily experience from one the same distance away that requires an awkward arterial crossing. Walk the route from the actual address, at the actual hour you would walk it, before drawing conclusions.
